This is a complex and intriguing Civil War novel that goes well beyond battlefield scenes to examine the social milieu of 19th-century America and the personal motives and struggles of the soldiers. It follows a Wisconsin soldier named Arlis Jenkins, a member of the famed “Iron Brigade.”
