Unattended Children Policy

In order to prevent undue disruption of normal library activities, to accommodate the general welfare of all persons using the library, and to provide for the general safety of children using the Dwight Foster Public Library, the Board of Trustees has approved the following rules and regulations as policy effective June 5, 1995 and revised August 28, 2004:

  1. All children seven (7) years of age or younger shall, at all times, be attended and adequately supervised by a responsible adult or mature adolescent thirteen (13) years of age or older.
  2. Children eight (8) years through twelve (12) years of age may use the library unattended providing proper behavior is maintained. However, children who come to the library unattended on a regular basis (2 or more days weekly) may stay only two hours unattended each day.
  3. Children thirteen (13) years of age or older may use the library unattended providing proper behavior is maintained.

In all situations, children with disruptive behavior will be asked to leave the library building and property. Procedures for inappropriate behavior will take effect immediately. If necessary the staff will not hesitate to call police if a situation warrants it. The Dwight Foster Public assumes no responsibility for children left unattended on library premises, including prior to or following all scheduled events.
